Reiki treatments can be performed on animals, with their permission. Observe their behavior and listen intuitively to determine their acceptance of the energy. Animals will clearly indicate to the Reiki practitioner if they are accepting of the treatment or not. Most animals will show signs of relaxation to show their acceptance of the treatment. An example of a "no thanks" to treatment could be the animal leaving the room or being unable to relax and showing signs of being annoyed by your presence.

Hand positions can be applied on or near the animal, depending on the animal's preference. Most Animal Reiki treatments consist of a combination of hands-on/hands-off positions, while the animal is free to move about in the treatment space, coming to and from the practitioner. A great beginning position is to sit several feet away from the animal with hands resting on your lap, palms up, and just offer the energy. Then allow the animal to show you the hand positions they prefer (if any).
