Toshihiro Eguchi, a friend and student of Mikao Usui, taught a form of
hands-on healing to the Ittôen community. Some families still practice this today although there are only about 100 residents remaining in the community. The present leader is the grandson of the founder, Nishida Tenko, and his name is Takeshi.
According to Professor Judith Rabinovitch, the Ittôen community is not a religion but more of a philosophical system. At its core are popular Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, Confucianism, and even some Christian teachings.
