The concept of guides is an add-on to the system of Reiki. It might stem from shamanism, yet witches were also believed to have familiars. Mystics, too, have been guided throughout the centuries by what they believed to be angelic beings — so the concept of spiritual guidance is quite broad based. It has been popularized in the modern system of Reiki.
