Frans and I have been writing non-stop since 2002 about the system of Reiki we have realised that semantics can be very important.
Therefore we would like to maintain a specific language in this wiki in regards to Reiki terminology to ensure clarity of understanding for readers and wiki friends.
An example is where we will be consistently using two references for those who practice Reiki. There will be Reiki Practitioners and Reiki Teachers.
Reiki Practitioner: One who practices Reiki at any level.
Reiki Teacher: Formally known as a Reiki Master, Reiki Master/Teacher etc...
Creating a language that is consistent will help everyone to understand what is being spoken of.
We've used the language of Reiki Branch instead of school. SchoolcanSchool can be misunderstood as an institution and branch clearly defines that whatever is being taught is a branch, or stems from, the system of Reiki.
We also write of "the system of Reiki". This refers to the practice which began with Mikao Usui and includes the five basic elements (reiju, hand positions, meditations/techniques, symbols and mantras and precepts). The system works with spiritual energy or as some call it universal energy; Reiki.
Mikao Usui should not be referred to as a doctor as he was not one. We find that the use of this term is disrespectful to the system and confusing for the general public. It is as if people are trying to make the system appear medicalised when it is not. When the general public find out that the system was not begun by a doctor (although its practitioners call him a doctor) it makes us all sound like snake oil sellers trying to "sell" something through false advertising.
To show respect for Mikao Usui you can call him Usui Sensei or simply utilise his correct name of Mikao Usui.
