In 1922, Mikao Usui formalized his teachings and began to teach hands-on healing to a group of naval officers. These men went on to create the Usui Reiki Ryôhô Gakkai, claiming Mikao Usui as their first president. The society still exists in Japan today. One member of the original society was Chûjirô Hayashi, whose teachings created the backbone for modern forms of the system of Reiki.
