The method of attaining spiritual enlightenment would differ depending on which Buddhist sect you belonged to. Zen emphasized meditation as a means of experiencing awakening while the Pure Land sect uses the chanting of Namu-Amida-Butsu (I take refuge in Amida Nyorai Buddha).
