(Japanese) Someone who practises Shugendô.
Also known as yamabushi. These were the ‘mountain men’ who were able to draw on the power of the kami (gods) through their magical powers acquired by esoteric practices. Shugenja would often heal disease, offer religious services, perform divination, exorcism and obtain oracles.
It is claimed that Mikao Usui was a shugenja.
