The cleansing process is also known as a healing crisis. It is a response to an attunement, reiju or Reiki treatment.
The body is attempting to remove toxins and re-balance and this can often be felt physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually.
After an attunement it is often said that the student will undergo a 21-day cleansing process in which the student must practice Reiki to aid the process. Though this is likely to be a recent addition to the system of Reiki it certainly has had its share of esoteric interpretations.
21-Day practices can also be found in Japanese forms such as Shugendô and Tendai. For example; traditional meditations, like the Buddhist hokkesen, are practiced for the duration of 21 days, but these are quite different to the three-week cleansing process.
Basically, the popularity of the three-week cleansing process concept can be put down to the fact that it is successful — it achieves its aim. That aim as far as the system of Reiki is concerned is to get people practicing. After practicing Reiki for three weeks students don’t want to stop practicing — it feels too good!
