The students of the
International House of Reiki are just that - international! Many of the contributors and visitors to this wiki will be reading and writing in English as a second or third language. Keeping some simple style tips in mind can help keep the presentation of this wiki professional - and make the information accessible to a linguistically diverse audience!
Check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. Attention to these mundane details reassures your readers that you are competent in delivering accurate information.
Tip: Paste your posts in an Outlook email or a Word document to run a quick spelling check and grammar check. The EasyEdit toolbar also has a spelling check tool. This toolbar is not available for discussion posts.
Check capitalization. The pronoun "I" is capitalized, as are place names, months and proper names. If you are unsure of correct capitalization, pick upper case or lower case - and remain consistent throughout your post.
Refer to the Reiki language page. Let's keep in line with the standard set by our teachers!
Avoid abbreviations and instant messaging language. Imagine trying to decipher UR2KUT if you are a non-native English speaker!
Use complete sentences and simple language.
Stand in your readers' shoes before you post. Check yourself for how you might sound to a reader.
Tip: After making changes, press F5 to refresh your screen and see your most recent changes.Practice the Precepts in your writing! Do not anger, be humble, be kind.
Feel free to ask for writing help! I'm available (when I'm not at my day job) through this site, or at
wellspring_reiki@msn.com.
Finally, don't be afraid to post. Your moderators will check the pages periodically to make minor editorial corrections.
Thanks for your contribution to the Reiki Wiki!
