I started my Reiki journey because of my dogs and cats, seeking a way to help them that was outside western medical protocol. My experience is largely with dogs and cats: I have not treated many horses, birds , fish, or other critters. Now I work professionally to provide Reiki treatments to others.
In my experience with working with my own and my friends' animal companions, I have found the advice of Usui Sensei in his Reiki Ryoho Hikkei to be of great value. In his words, "Ki and light are radiated from the healer's body, especially from the eyes, mouth and hands. So if the healer stares, breathes on or strokes with hands the affected area... pain will be gone." I have found that most dogs and cats are extremely sensitive to Reiki, and direct hand positions are uncomfortable for them. Rather than try to work with specific hand positions, I find that if a dog or cat will allow me to pet them, then the stroking motions that you would use to comfort an animal companion anyway are usually very well accepted. Consciously direct the gaze and breath with the intent of sharing Reiki, and the treatment occurs without having to "confine" a pet with specific hand positions. An advantage to bringing in the gaze and breath into our Reiki work is that if the dog or cat is unfomfortable with the touch of unfamiliar hands (as was my Indi when I rescued him) then the treatment can still occur without forcing touch. Combine the above with sensitivity to whether the "patient" is willing to receive the treatment. Just because they can't vocalize 'no' does not imply an automatic yes. When unsure of permission in a professional treatment setting, I "intend" to offer the Reiki to the animal, and acknowledge that they will take only what they need.

I just had an interesting experience - a phone call about a treatment. I was asked some good questions about my years of experience, my charge per session, what level I currently practice.
Then came the zinger. "Do you see auras clearly or not so clearly?" To which I responded, "I do not practice as a professional psychic." My would-be client said a polite thank you and promptly hung up on me. I meet so many practitioners who consider themselves psychic because they practice Reiki. The two things can certainly go together - but I am not a psychic, and have no wish to become one. Once again I find myself frustrated at the expectation that I *must* be psychic or I am not a "good" Reiki practitioner. Reiki is a simple practice, but no less profound for that. The practice does not need to be combined with anything else to make it more valid.

Originally the Japanese language had no writing system. Until 6th century, any texts in Japan were written in Chinese and would have been read in Chinese.
Over time, however, a system known as kanbun (漢文) was developed, which involved diacritical marks to help Japanese speakers pronounce Chinese characters correctly and allowed changing word order and adding particles and verb endings in accordance with the rules of Japanese grammar. This evolved into a writing system called man'yōgana that used a limited set of Chinese characters for their sound, ignoring their meaning. The modern kana characters later evolved from this system. The kanji, on the other hand, were never forgotten and they are still used to write Japanese. Their meaning was not ignored; most characters still have the same meaning in Japanese and Chinese. The kanji usually have both Japanese (kun'yomi, 訓読み) and Chinese (on'yomi, 音読み) reading. Both are used in Japanese spoken language.

I am not able to see Auras usually. But while doing Reiki on someone many times I will see tendrils of white smoke or steam swirling up from the body and dissipating into the air. Sometimes its hundreds of them and sometimes its a few.
Is this the Aura that I'm seeing?

The "anshin ritsumei" experience is described how satori. Satori is a no-mind state. The yoga/hindu objective is attain a state of union with a personal god (Ishvara, Shiva). The Buddhism see the gods/devas how lost beings in samsara (reencarnation cicle). The buddhist enlightenment is above concepts and deities.

What is interesting to note is that many Reiki teachers say that the system of Reiki comes from Tibet and therefore also start to include the 7 Indian chakras.
What they seem to forget is that in most traditional Tibetan teachings they only 5 chakras are used! Here is a quote from one of Kalu Rinpoche's books: Situated along the length of these three main channels are five cakras.....with their location in ascending order being genital region, navel, heart, throat and crown of one's head. It is interesting that we often accept what we are told without questioning it. But really, it is worth questioning things! Cheers Frans Stiene

Hi Kathleen. Thank you for composing the introduction page about animal communication and Reiki. You did a wonderful job. I first discovered Reiki during an advanced animal communication course back in the mid 90's. I had no idea what it was, but everyone that was talking about it was very happy and excited. When I returned home I discovered a Reiki level one course and attended so that I might learn what all the happiness and excitement was all about. Well that was the beginning of my journey on my path of teaching everyone that they can communicate with animals and that they have the ability to offer Reiki to themselves and their animal companions.
Over the years as I have worked as a professional animal communicator, I find myself offering Reiki to animals, as well as their human companions, fairly often. Reiki helps with so many issues that can come up during a conversation with an animal such as, behavior issues, physical issues, end of life transition, lost animals, shelter/rescue animals and so much more. As has already been stated in the animal communication/animal Reiki introduction, when I offer Reiki to an animal (or a human) I quiet myself and just get out of the way, allowing Reiki to work its magic. I might silently communicate with an animal before I begin a session by asking their permission and telling them exactly what I will be doing, but after that I do my best to become quiet. That allows the animal to quiet as well. They don't need chatter going on in their head during a Reiki session. Of course things may come up like pictures, feelings, and so on. Just let them float on by. Don’t make a big deal out of them. I look forward to hearing from others, their experiences with animals, Reiki and telepathic communication. - Janet

Hi Everyone,
I own 2 dogs. 1 Cocker spaniel (red) and 1 beagle. They are both 9 months old and were rescued from the RSPCA due to abuse and not being able to find the right home. It is amazing over the last 3 months how much Reiki can do for an animal. I find it an alternative way to communicate with the animals. to. I hold the dog in my arms and put their head next to my heart and perform Reiki on their tummies and heart. I think they are too head strong and not good to perform Reiki on the head. They love it and once they are let go they love running around and jumping around like a new lease on life. They are such a beautiful animal

Some objections have been leveled at Reiki from a dogmatic Christian perspective. These mostly relate to Western add-ons, but they're practiced widely:-
1. Universal life energy as a spiritual force is contrary to Christian belief that the human soul is unique and personal (Pantheism / "oneness"). 2. Invocation of "God Consciousness" rather than the Holy Trinity (Panentheism). 3. Invocation of spirit guides or calling upon spirits - considered very dangerous. 4. Channeling and other associated psychic practices... So, I think there's a need to be honest about what's being offered... John [Many colours in the Homo rainbow]

Hi folks,
Just wanted to make a comment about the above Diety & SHK. While Amida Nyorai may be where SHK (within Reiki) originated, it doesn't follow automatically that it holds the same meaning within Reiki. What was wrote under 'Islam' kinda conflicts with what's wrote above also. Members of religions may not feel comfortable using what in effect is taught as representing a Buddhist diety. Only a couple of weeks ago, on a Reiki forum, i saw a muslim who felt uncomfortabel using Reiki, as he began to feel that using the symbols was calling upon others things besides Allah. Without concrete evidence, besides single sources, i feel it's a move in the wrong direction to allude to such Buddhist meanings. Any thoughts? :-) . Wayne.

When I studied western Reiki, we did an exercise where we chose an item from a bowl containing different shells, stones , seed pods and small pieces of wood and then did distant or absent healing on it. During my meditation and healing on the shell I chose, I had a vision of being on a boat on the Nile in ancient Egypt. My Reiki teacher told me that I had gone back and healed a past life. This was an interesting experience for me . Now that I have studied traditional Japanese Reiki with IHR I see it as something different to Reiki but nonetheless an energetic experience,. When we reach that place of non duality, that space of oneness, then there is no past, no present or future, so there is nothing to heal
for that moment, in that space. Reaching that space is the destination of our spiritual journey and accessing that space our aim when we practice Reiki.
