Christian Objections to Reiki
Jun 19 2008, 6:29 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 19 2008, 6:29 PM EDT
Some objections have been leveled at Reiki from a dogmatic Christian perspective. These mostly relate to Western add-ons, but they're practiced widely:-

1. Universal life energy as a spiritual force is contrary to Christian belief that the human soul is unique and personal (Pantheism / "oneness").
2. Invocation of "God Consciousness" rather than the Holy Trinity (Panentheism).
3. Invocation of spirit guides or calling upon spirits - considered very dangerous.
4. Channeling and other associated psychic practices...

So, I think there's a need to be honest about what's being offered...

Check out this website:
Reiki for Christians

Excerpt from Reiki and Christianity
"Reiki can be considered “God’s Work” just as many other things can be.
-If you are a Christian and believe in God, then practicing Reiki can bring you closer to God and to your own personal spiritual and religious path.
-Many very religious individuals practice Reiki and feel that it is the work of God and that God brought them to Reiki in order to follow his example and to help heal others.
-There are many dedicated and selfless members of the clergy who are Reiki Masters and teachers.
-By giving the gift of Reiki, either in a session or a class, you are without a question doing God’s work. "

Please take some time to read some of the comments. There are some interesting stories there, and although the views ARE extreme, and DO NOT reflect my views as a Christian, they are strongly held beliefs.

A defining characteristic of Reiki is that it is a spiritual method of healing. That, for me, makes Reiki profoundly appealing. In my view, we must be clear and specific that there is a spiritual aspect to Reiki healing, and allow the client to make a considered choice.

Furthermore, if we mix other “new age” practices with Reiki - we should also be clear and honest about it.

My point is that it’s up to the client to make an informed choice, rather than for us to make the choice for them.

People must make the right choice for themselves.

Love,

John

Matthew 7:16-20 (King James Version)

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Does this sound familiar?

(Worldwide English New Testament)

Matthew 6:34
`So do not be troubling yourself about tomorrow. Tomorrow will have its own trouble. Today's trouble is enough for today.'

Ephesians 4:31
You must stop all hate, big and small anger, loud talk, saying wrong things about people, and all wanting to do wrong things to people.

Matthew 6:25
[ Do Not Worry ] “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Colossians 3:17
Whatever you say, or whatever you do, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. Give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.

Romans 12:11
Do not hold back in what you do. Let the Spirit burn in you. Work hard for the Lord.

Ephesians 4:32
Be kind to one another. Have a loving and understanding heart. Forgive one another because God has forgiven you for Christ's sake.

Hi All,

You are right John about not mixing "New Age" practices with the system of Reiki. Adding material creates confusion about what the system really is about.

We will also add some podcasts to this page about the system of Reiki and Christianity.

Hi John,

I checked out the websites that you mentioned, I was quite shocked. I agree with you when you said "we must be clear and specific that there is a spiritual aspect to Reiki healing, and allow the client to make a considered choice."

One of my favorite quotes( Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei) that I want to share :-)
"Deeds are the criteria of a good Reiki practitioner and a good Teacher. Your mental, verbal and bodily needs, i.e., what you think, what you speak and what you do are of the greatest importance"

I believe in honesty and integrity, a person might fool someone for a short time but not for long. The truth will always come out.

A lot of Western and even so called Traditional Reiki Master/Teachers have add ons in the way they teach and if you are observant you will see it everywhere.

There's so much contradictions in the Reiki community. It amazes me to meet Reiki Masters/Teachers who claimed that they have a lot of Reiki experience/wrote books etc. but it doesn't show in the way they act/say/think :-)

I'm a Critical Care RN who's working in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for more than 20 years and 3 months before graduation from Holistic Nursing when Reiki came to me.

I've been using Reiki alone and/or in combination with other healing modalities. I'm blessed to share this wonderful gift to myself, my family, my friends, co-workers, my patients and families as well as clients in my private practice.

Being a Reiki Master/Teacher is a big responsibility, we owe to give our students the most honest and accurate information that we can provide in order for them to be well informed

Reiki is not a competition. Reiki is both a therapeutic and spiritual practice. Reiki is a heavenly gift given to us by Usui Sensei. Reiki is a blessing that anyone can learn and is to be made available for the good of mankind.

Lilia
